More Than a Product Claim: Evidence You Can Check

Certification standards and independent test reports help customers understand what a filtration product has actually been evaluated for. Instead of relying only on packaging, advertising, or marketplace descriptions, you can review the applicable standard, product model, tested claim, and supporting documentation.

Documentation Across Purewell Filtration Products Purewell filtration systems and replacement filters are supported by corresponding certification and/or test documentation. Customers can review system documents, filter documents, and performance reports through the Purewell Test Reports page.

Verifiable Evidence

NSF/ANSI 42

Drinking Water Treatment Units — Aesthetic Effects

What Does It Mean in Everyday Language?

This standard evaluates drinking-water treatment products for specified effects that influence the appearance, taste, smell, or everyday drinking experience of water.

Chlorine reduction, when listed

Taste and odor reduction, when listed

Particulate reduction, when listed

Materials, construction, and performance requirements

Certification Is Claim-Specific NSF/ANSI 42 does not automatically mean that a product reduces every contaminant. Check the certificate or listing for the exact model and certified reduction claims.

372

NSF/ANSI/CAN 372

Drinking Water System Components — Lead Content

What Does It Mean in Everyday Language?

This standard evaluates the lead content of materials and components that come into contact with drinking water, using defined calculations and verification procedures.

Evaluates wetted product components

Verifies applicable lead-content limits

Reviews materials used in the water pathway

Supports lead-content compliance verification

Lead Content Is Not Lead Reduction NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 evaluates lead content in product materials. It does not by itself certify that a filter removes lead already present in the source water.

From a Marketing Claim to Verifiable Evidence

Reliable documentation connects a standard to an identifiable product, a defined test scope, and a report or certificate that customers can review.

Identify the Standard Confirm whether the document refers to NSF/ANSI 42, NSF/ANSI/CAN 372, or another applicable standard.

Match the Product Check that the brand, product type, component, or model matches the item being sold.

Read the Test Scope Review exactly what was evaluated, including the reduction claim, material requirement, test condition, or performance category.

Review the Evidence Open the certificate, listing, or laboratory report instead of relying only on a badge or unsupported product description.

Product with Verifiable Documentation Claims can be checked against supporting evidence.

The applicable product or component can be identified.
The meaning and scope of the standard can be reviewed.
Specific performance claims can be checked against a report.
Customers can distinguish certification from general testing.
Material and performance claims have a documented basis.

Documentation does not mean every possible contaminant has been tested. It provides evidence for the specific scope shown in the applicable certificate or report.

Product Without Accessible Evidence Important claims may be difficult to confirm.

A standard logo may appear without a matching certificate.
The tested model may differ from the product being purchased.
Broad removal claims may exceed the actual test scope.
Lead-content compliance may be unclear or undocumented.
Customers may be unable to verify the source or date of a report.

An unavailable report does not automatically prove that a product is unsafe. However, it prevents customers from independently confirming the advertised certification and performance claims.

Documentation Available from Purewell

Purewell organizes supporting documents by system, filter, standard, and filtration performance so customers can review the evidence relevant to their product.

Filter System Documents Certification or test documentation associated with applicable complete filtration-system components.

Replacement Filter Documents Supporting documentation associated with applicable Purewell replacement filters and filter elements.

Performance Test Reports Laboratory reports covering specified filtration-performance categories under defined test conditions.

Customer-Accessible Files Downloadable documents provide more transparency than a badge, short claim, or marketplace product description alone.

Important Certification Notes

Reading the standard correctly is as important as seeing the certification or test badge.

Check the Exact Product or Component Certification and test results should be matched to the applicable product, filter, component, model, or documented product family.

Check the Exact Certified Claim A product certified under NSF/ANSI 42 may support only the reduction claims specifically shown in its certificate or listing.

372 Does Not Mean Lead Removal NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 concerns lead content in wetted materials. Lead reduction from source water requires a separate applicable filtration-performance claim.

Certification and Testing Are Different A certification, a component certification, and an independent laboratory test report are different forms of evidence and should be described accurately.

Review Test Conditions Results may depend on source-water conditions, flow rate, capacity, product setup, test protocol, and filter condition.

Replace Filters as Directed Certification or testing does not make a filter permanent. Follow the applicable installation, flushing, use, and replacement instructions.

Pressure-Driven Reverse Osmosis Technology

A Selective Membrane Designed to Reduce Dissolved Solids

A reverse osmosis membrane uses pressure and selective separation to divide incoming water into two streams. Water that passes through the membrane becomes the purified-water stream, while many rejected dissolved substances leave through a separate concentrated-water outlet.

Standard Composite RO Cartridge The K8680 combines activated carbon and a reverse osmosis membrane inside its standard composite cartridge. The RO membrane is part of the main filtration construction rather than an optional add-on.

K8680 Standard

Separation Across the RO Membrane

Pressurized Feed Water

Concentrated Water

Purified Water

TDS

Ion

Salt

Ion

Pump pressure moves source water toward the membrane

Water passes through the selective membrane layer

Rejected dissolved substances leave with concentrated water

How Reverse Osmosis Works

Reverse osmosis is not simple particle screening. The system uses pump pressure to move pretreated water across a selective membrane and separate the purified-water stream from the concentrated-water stream.

Water Is Pretreated The intake pre-filter and activated carbon stages help reduce sediment, debris, chlorine-related characteristics, taste, and odor before water reaches the RO membrane.

The Pump Creates Operating Pressure The electric pump provides the pressure required to move source water toward and across the reverse osmosis membrane.

Water Contacts the Selective Membrane The membrane allows water to move into the purified-water pathway while restricting many dissolved salts, ions, and other membrane-rejected substances.

Purified Water Passes Through Water that passes through the membrane is called permeate and is directed toward the blue PURE water outlet.

Concentrated Water Is Separated Rejected dissolved substances remain in the concentrated water stream, which leaves the system through the red DIRTY water outlet.

Helps Reduce TDS Reverse osmosis is designed to reduce many dissolved substances that contribute to total dissolved solids.

Selective Separation The membrane separates water from many dissolved salts, minerals, ions, and other membrane-rejected substances.

Separate Water Streams Purified water and concentrated water leave through separate outlets instead of remaining mixed together.

Works with Multiple Stages The RO membrane works together with pre-filtration, activated carbon, TDS monitoring, and UV treatment in the K8680 system.

✓ Designed to Help Reduce

Total dissolved solids in source water
Many dissolved salts and mineral ions
Certain dissolved metals and inorganic substances
Selected contaminants rejected by the membrane
Differences between raw-water and purified-water TDS

i Understand the Filtration Limit

Does not reduce every substance at the same rate
Does not eliminate the need for pre-filtration
Requires suitable pressure and operating conditions
Produces a separate concentrated-water stream
Is not intended for seawater or industrial wastewater

Important Use and Care Notes

Correct preparation, source-water selection, flushing, and timely cartridge replacement help maintain membrane performance.

Complete the Initial Flush Flush the system before drinking from it for the first time. Discard the initial water until it runs clear and the system completes its cleaning cycle.

Protect the Membrane with Pre-Filtration Keep the intake pre-filter and medical PP cotton clean. Excess sediment can reduce water flow and place additional load on the RO cartridge.

Use Within the Temperature Range Use source water between 41°F and 100°F / 5°C and 38°C. Do not use hot water or allow the system to freeze.

Monitor Purified-Water TDS Compare raw-water and purified-water TDS readings. A consistently elevated purified-water reading may indicate reduced membrane performance.

Replace the Cartridge When Needed Replace the composite RO cartridge when its rated life is reached or when water flow, taste, odor, or TDS performance noticeably declines.

Store the System Correctly For long-term storage, drain the system, remove the filters, allow the components to dry, and store them in a cool, dry location.

Reverse osmosis performance depends on source-water TDS, temperature, pump pressure, membrane condition, flow rate, maintenance, and product design. The K8680 specification lists a 95% desalination rate under rated conditions. Actual results may vary. Specific contaminant-reduction statements should be based on the applicable Purewell product specifications and test reports.

Coconut Shell Activated Carbon Technology

Coconut Shell Activated Carbon Designed to Improve Water Taste and Odor

Where listed in the applicable Purewell product specification, the filtration media uses activated carbon derived from coconut shells. The coconut shells are processed to create a network of microscopic pores and a large internal surface area. As water moves through the media, certain compounds are attracted to and held on the carbon surface through a process known as adsorption.

Coconut Shell–Derived Activated Carbon Media Where activated carbon is listed in the product specification, Purewell uses activated carbon derived from coconut shells as part of the standard filter construction rather than offering it only as an optional upgrade.

Purewell Standard

Adsorption Inside the Carbon Media

Incoming Water

Water Flows Out

Water carries chlorine, taste, odor, and certain organic compounds

Certain compounds are held within the porous carbon surface

Water continues through the filtration system

How Activated Carbon Works

Coconut shells are converted into highly porous activated carbon. The media primarily works through adsorption, meaning certain compounds are attracted to the carbon surface instead of simply being screened out by pore size.

Water Enters the Carbon Media Source water flows around and between the activated carbon particles inside the filter.

Water Contacts the Porous Coconut Carbon Processing the coconut shell material creates microscopic pores and a large internal surface area for water and dissolved compounds to contact.

Certain Compounds Are Adsorbed Chlorine, taste-and-odor compounds, and certain organic substances may be attracted to and held on the carbon surface.

Water Continues Through the Filter After contacting the carbon media, water moves to the next filtration stage or exits the system, depending on the filter design.

Improves Taste and Odor Helps reduce compounds that can create unwanted tastes or odors in drinking water.

Helps Reduce Chlorine Activated carbon is commonly used to help reduce chlorine taste and odor in treated municipal water.

High Internal Surface Area A network of microscopic pores creates extensive contact area within a compact amount of filter media.

No Treatment Chemicals Added Activated carbon performs through surface adsorption and does not require chemicals to be added to the water.

Coconut Shell–Derived Media Uses activated carbon made from processed coconut shells, where specified for the applicable Purewell filter.

✓ Designed to Help Reduce

Chlorine taste and odor
Unpleasant tastes and smells
Certain volatile organic compounds
Certain adsorption-sensitive organic substances

i Understand the Filtration Limit

Does not normally reduce dissolved salts or TDS
Does not soften hard water by itself
Is not a complete microbiological barrier on its own
Does not reduce every contaminant without additional media

Important Use and Care Notes

Correct preparation and timely replacement help maintain adsorption performance and water quality.

Flush Before First Use Flush the filter according to the product instructions before drinking. This helps remove loose carbon fines and trapped air.

Temporary Carbon Fines May Appear A small amount of dark carbon dust may appear during initial rinsing. Continue flushing until the water runs clear.

Use Within the Recommended Temperature Range Do not use hot water unless the specific product instructions state that the filter is designed for hot-water use.

Use with an Appropriate Water Source Activated carbon alone does not make microbiologically unsafe, industrially polluted, or saltwater sources suitable for drinking.

Replace the Filter on Schedule Adsorption sites gradually become occupied. Replace the filter when its rated life is reached or when taste and odor reduction noticeably declines.

Follow Storage Instructions Clean and store the filter as directed when the system will not be used for an extended period. Do not leave stagnant water in the system longer than recommended.

Coconut Allergy Precaution This filtration media is derived from coconut shells. People with a known coconut allergy or sensitivity should review the product materials and consult a qualified healthcare professional before use.

Filtration performance depends on the activated carbon type, carbon quantity, contact time, water quality, flow rate, product design, and maintenance. Specific contaminant-reduction claims should be based on the applicable Purewell product specifications and test results.

We really appreciate your kind words! Glad to hear it was easy to set up and the water tastes great. Thanks for choosing Purewell!
