How to Purify Water Without Power: UK Emergency Options

  • 〡
  • 〡 von Pete Miller — Purewell Water Specialist

A power cut doesn't usually stop your tap, but it can knock out the pumps and treatment steps that keep water safe — and it stops any electric purifier or fridge filter you rely on. Here are the ways to treat water when the electricity is off.

Direct answer: Without power you can still make water safer with boiling (kills microbes), chemical drops (chlorine/iodine), a UV pen (needs a charge), or a gravity filter (no power at all). A gravity filter using activated carbon and 0.01-micron ultrafiltration reduces bacteria and protozoa and improves taste — but, honestly, it does not remove viruses or PFAS, and it is not a substitute for boiling visibly contaminated water.
Purewell K Series 2.25-gallon gravity water filter — works without electricity during UK power cuts

During a power cut, a gravity filter keeps working with no mains power.

Why a power cut affects water safety

In the UK, treated mains water is generally safe, and a short outage rarely changes that. The risk appears when booster pumps or local treatment lose power, when advisory “boil before use” notices are issued after an incident, or when you are treating found water (collected rainwater, a camping supply, flood-affected sources). In those cases you need a method that doesn't depend on the grid.

Methods that need no mains electricity

Four practical options work without plugging in:

  • Boiling — brings water to a rolling boil for at least one minute. Kills bacteria, viruses and protozoa. Needs a heat source (gas hob, camping stove) but no electricity.
  • Chemical treatment — chlorine dioxide or iodine drops. Light, cheap, long shelf life. Takes contact time (often 30+ minutes) and can affect taste.
  • UV pen — a battery or USB-charged ultraviolet wand that inactivates microbes. Needs a remaining charge and clear water to work well.
  • Gravity filter — water passes through filter media by gravity. No power, no batteries, works repeatedly. See below for what it does and doesn't remove.

How a gravity filter fits

A gravity water filter sits on the counter or a table. You pour water into the top chamber; gravity pulls it through the media into the lower chamber. There is nothing to plug in and no pump to fail.

Inside, the typical multi-stage path is: a sediment pre-filter catches rust, silt and debris; activated carbon with silver ions reduces chlorine taste and helps inhibit bacterial growth in the filter; and a 0.01-micron ultrafiltration (UF) membrane physically screens out bacteria and protozoa.

Purewell K Series carbon filter cartridge — activated carbon with silver ions stage

The carbon stage reduces chlorine taste and inhibits bacterial growth in the filter media.

What gravity filtration removes — and what it doesn't

Honesty matters here, because over-claiming gets people sick:

Contaminant / concern Gravity UF carbon filter
Sediment, rust, debris Yes — pre-filter stage
Chlorine taste & odour Yes — activated carbon
Bacteria (e.g. E. coli) Yes — 0.01-micron UF
Protozoa (Giardia, Cryptosporidium) Yes — 0.01-micron UF
Viruses No — too small for UF alone
PFAS ("forever chemicals") No — needs specialised media
Dissolved salts / seawater No — not a desalinator
Important: For visibly dirty, flood-affected, or unknown-source water, boil first (or use a method proven against viruses) and use the gravity filter as a taste/clarity improvement, not your only defence. Follow official UK guidance at gov.uk/beready.

Comparing the methods

Method Power? Bacteria & protozoa Viruses Taste
Boiling Heat source only Yes Yes Flat
Chemical drops No Yes Usually yes Can taint
UV pen Needs charge Yes Yes Unchanged
Gravity filter No Yes No Improved

When a gravity filter is the right call

A gravity filter is a strong everyday-and-emergency choice when you want better-tasting water without plumbing or power, and a sensible backup when the grid is down but your water source is otherwise trustworthy (mains under a boil notice, or clean-collected rainwater). It is not your tool for virus-contaminated or chemically polluted water.

For the bigger picture on filter types, see our best gravity filter UK guide and the countertop vs RO comparison.

Recommended emergency backup water filter

Lighten your emergency storage burden with a non-electric, stainless steel gravity filtration system — available in your regional store:

Specification note: activated carbon with silver ions + 0.01-micron ultrafiltration reduces bacteria, protozoa, and chlorine taste without electricity. It does not remove viruses or PFAS, and is not a desalinator. Also consider the BO Series 2.25-gallon for a lower-cost entry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I purify water with no electricity at all?

Yes — boiling on a gas hob, chemical drops, a pre-charged UV pen, and gravity filters all work without mains power.

Do gravity water filters need batteries?

No. The models discussed here run purely on gravity; there is nothing to charge or plug in.

Will a gravity filter remove viruses?

No. A 0.01-micron ultrafiltration stage removes bacteria and protozoa but not viruses. For virus risk, boil or use a proven chemical/UV method.

Does a gravity filter remove PFAS?

No. PFAS removal requires specialised media that standard gravity carbon/UF systems do not include.

Is rainwater safe after a gravity filter?

It is improved, not guaranteed safe. Rainwater can carry roof and bird contaminants; boil first for higher-risk sources and follow official advice.

What should I do during a boil-water notice?

Follow the notice: boil water before use. A gravity filter can improve taste afterwards but is not a substitute for boiling during the notice.

Which Purewell filter works without power?

The K Series 2.25-gallon and BO Series 2.25-gallon gravity systems need no electricity. See product pages for full specifications.
