Start with the cartridge, not the tank
A stainless-steel housing tells you how water is stored. The installed cartridge determines which filtration claims you should investigate. Two similar-looking systems can come with different media, instructions and replacement limits.
Purewell: specify the K Series option
The saved 2.25-gallon product listing identifies K8012 as the 3-Stage Advanced carbon option, K8014 as the separately offered fluoride option and K8015 as the pH option. Those names identify choices; they do not establish a tested reduction percentage. Selecting one option does not give it the evidence of another.
Berkey: specify the element generation
The manufacturer now lists Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition replacement elements. If a review discusses Black Berkey elements, confirm whether that is what your seller actually supplies. Compare current instructions and evidence for the actual purchase, rather than combining specifications from different generations.

Which one filters better?
There is no defensible all-contaminant winner in this guide. We have not run a head-to-head laboratory test, and this page does not claim that either complete configuration is certified for PFAS, fluoride or lead reduction.
Choose the substance you want to reduce, then compare matching evidence: exact model, named substance, test conditions, rated capacity and replacement instructions. A missing document in this comparison means unverified here—not proof that a product fails.

Making room to refill
Measure the work surface and overhead clearance. You need room to lift the lid and pour water, not just enough space for the assembled housing.

Plan refills around household demand. Do not compare advertised maximum flow rates unless the filter count, water level and test conditions match.
Keeping maintenance simple
Keep the correct cartridge instructions nearby. Cleaning advice for one filter material should not automatically be applied to another.

Frequently asked questions
Is Purewell the same as Berkey?
No. They are separate brands. Similar housing capacity does not establish the same cartridge design, performance or warranty.
Can I use Purewell cartridges in a Berkey tank?
This guide does not establish cross-brand compatibility. Confirm the exact housing and cartridge combination with the manufacturer before purchase.
Does the compared Purewell system lower TDS?
Purewell’s listing says these K Series filters are not designed to lower TDS. Do not choose this configuration specifically to reduce the TDS reading.
Which system is cheaper over a year?
